Uber has launched a new taxi-partnership service in Hong Kong, even though the only firm known to have signed up pulled out at the last minute, apparently under pressure from other operators.

The new "Uber Flash" service matches people looking for a ride with nearby taxis or an UberX, with fares and payments settled through the app.

Uber has launched similar taxi-partnerships in Taiwan, Japan, South Korea and Singapore.

But when it came to Tuesday's launch in the SAR, no representatives showed up from the first partner firm announced, Tin Shing Motors.

The day before, taxi groups branded the firm a traitor for going into business with the global ride-hailing giant.

Uber's head of public policy for North Asia, Emilie Potvin, said it was unfortunate that Tin Shing wasn't at the launch ceremony, but the new service is ready to use regardless.

"We respect Tin Shing's decision not to partner with us. Our product does not rely on one company. Our product is one that is available today. There are drivers on the platform at the moment," Potvin said.

She declined to say how many taxi drivers have signed up to Uber Flash, saying the firm never gives out such information on its services. But she added that the partnership is a chance to prove to taxi drivers that Uber's technology can enhance their business.

"We hope that more and more drivers, whether it's operators, whether it's fleets, whether it's drivers, are going to be able to join Uber Flash in the future."

Amid concerns about Uber's legality, Ms Potvin said everything the company does complies with the law.

"The taxis that are on the Uber platform are compliant with Hong Kong regulations," she said.

At a protest on Monday, around three dozen taxi groups said Uber is hurting their livelihoods and the authorities should take action to stop it operating in the city.
