Jason Wong speaks to RTHK's Janice Wong
The Travel Industry Council says a new task force it recently set up will work with police and district councils to try to head off problems caused by large numbers of tourists overwhelming parts of Hong Kong.
The council announced the establishment of its “district coordination group for mainland China inbound tours” on Friday, and it is made up of some 20 representatives of travel agents, tour guide unions, coach operators and the restaurant trade.
The group was formed following months of complaints from people living in areas that have been flooded with mainland tour groups, including To Kwa Wan and Tung Chung.
Council chairman Jason Wong said on Monday that the new body will explore measures to manage the flow of visitors better.
For example, Wong said, it will try to coordinate different tour groups to see if their itineraries can be modified so they are diverted to less busy areas.
He told RTHK's Janice Wong that it will hopefully be more effective than similar measures carried out in the past by individual travel agents.
He said the task force will also actively seek advice from district councillors and the police.
