Winnie Chiu talks to RTHK's Candice Wong

Hong Kong's new Ombudsman, Winnie Chiu, said on Thursday that she has already made arrangements to stay out of any probe her office undertakes involving her former employer – the police.

Chiu, who was the SAR's first female deputy police commissioner, said she has taken steps to have the deputy Ombudsman deal with any such cases to avoid a conflict of interest.

But she said the Ombudsman doesn't have the power to review police operations, although it can examine cases where the force is accused of wrongly failing to provide people with information they request.

Chiu said she wants to make the public more aware of the Ombudsman's role as an agency which looks into complaints of maladministration.

The new Ombudsman also told RTHK's Candice Wong that she wants to streamline the work of her office.
