Zheng Yanxiong, the new director of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Hong Kong SAR, on Sunday delivered his first Spring Festival speech, urging the city to grasp opportunities provided by the mainland to gain more prosperity.

The liaison office released Zheng's video speech, in which he said Hong Kong's "prosperity" can be more powerful if it seizes the huge opportunities of Chinese-style modernisation.

Zheng also stressed that Hong Kong must resolutely safeguard the constitutional order of the SAR established by the "Constitution" and "Basic Law".

He added the liaison office will continue to fully support the Chief Executive and his government in governing in accordance with the law.

Zheng, 59, on Saturday succeeded Luo Huining, who had been in the position since January 2020.

He had previously served as a Guangdong official, and was appointed in July 2020 director of the Office for Safeguarding National Security in Hong Kong.
