The Police Dog Unit says it bred 19 dogs last year, as 21 of its crime-fighting canines will retire next year at the age of nine.

The puppies – Labradors and Malinois, a type of Belgian shepherd dog – will be sent to different police stations when they're five months old, to familiarise themselves with the environment.

Inspector Ha Yick-hang said they will return to the dog unit for training when they're one. More than a third of police dogs are bred at the unit.

The dogs do general patrols, detect drugs and explosives, and recover evidence at crime scenes.
