A 30-year-old legal assistant charged under the national security law has been remanded in custody after the West Kowloon Magistracy adjourned his hearing to June 7.

Prosecutors allege that Chan Tsz-wah colluded with media tycoon Jimmy Lai, activist Andy Li and others in requesting a foreign country to impose sanctions on Hong Kong between July 2020 and February 2021.

Chan is also accused of colluding with Lai in helping Li with an alleged bid to flee to Taiwan.

During a mention hearing, prosecutors said they had to obtain legal advice, while the police needed more time to investigate further.

The defence, meanwhile, did not apply for bail.

A family member of Chan later told reporters that Chan had decided to hire Victor Lau, a DAB member, as his new solicitor.

The bespectacled defendant wore a grey suit and put his hand over his chest as he looked toward the courtroom's public gallery, where a few dozen people had come to show their support.

Before he was escorted from the court, someone in the gallery shouted, “Hang in there! Take good care of yourself!"
