People in Hong Kong paid tribute to the late Queen Elizabeth II on Friday, placing flowers outside the British Consulate and signing a book of condolence there.

"The coins we used when we were young bore the queen's face, her presence was in our daily lives," said a woman named Denise who brought along flowers to pay her respects to the monarch who died on Thursday.

"Government schools had the queen's portrait, when television broadcasts ended there would also be the queen's face and song, these are all unforgettable memories for Hong Kong people," she added.

A man surnamed Yiu said he had been in the UK for 20 years and the queen had been "part of his life growing up."

"I think what she symbolises is very much how irrespective of what happens politically, even in the UK or internationally across the world, the queen has always been the queen, and I think it's a very sad event that she's passed away and I think it's also an end to her legacy," he told RTHK.

Yiu said he was touched by the outpouring of grief around the world for the second-longest reigning monarch in history.

"To have been alive in a period where there was a queen is fortunate because obviously it's not likely there will be another [British] queen for some time," he continued.

The British Consulate in Hong Kong said a book of condolence is available at its entrance until next Friday for people to pay homage to the late queen.
