A woman was found guilty on Wednesday of child neglect so severe that it left her daughter in a vegetative state.

The High Court heard that the seven-year-old child, Suki, suffered from serious malnutrition and permanent brain damage in 2015.

The girl's heart stopped beating when she was rushed to Yan Chai Hospital and she had wounds all over her body.

The jury unanimously found the girl's mother, Mandy Wong, guilty of child neglect.

The jury also found Wong and the girl's step-father, Rocky Ling, guilty of perverting the course of justice, after they lied to the police about what had happened to the girl.

Judge Kevin Zervos described the crime as the worst of its kind, and said the maximum sentence of 10 years in jail would not be able to reflect the severity of the case.

Both defendants were remanded in custody ahead of a mitigation hearing on Thursday.
