Election authorities say 1,248,648 voters had cast ballots by 8.30pm on Sunday in the geographical constituency races of the 2021 Legislative Council election.

This represents a turnout of 27.9 percent.

At the same time in the previous polls in 2016, 47.8 percent of the electorate had cast their votes, though the vote started one hour earlier five year ago.

Turnout for functional constituency seats reached 29.3 percent by 8.30pm – compared with 59.6 percent at the same point in the 2016 polls.

For the new Election Committee seats, 97.8 percent of the 1,448 registered voters had cast ballots with two hours left to vote.

One of the few who had not cast their ballots is former Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa.

A spokesman for the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) vice-chairman said he was resting at home.

He added that Tung, as always, hopes for an enthusiastic response to the election, and that Hong Kong will continue to be prosperous and stable.
