  • Minister: daily school Covid tests likely to end soon

Education Secretary Christine Choi said on Saturday that it's likely that daily Covid tests for pupils and teachers will be scrapped from next month.

Under one of Hong Kong's last mandatory testing regimes, both groups must take a rapid antigen test before going to school every day.

The minister says the pandemic situation is now stable, and that schools will be told about the new arrangement as soon as possible.

"We will closely monitor the situation, assess the pandemic situation and seek advice from the experts. We will make the decision and let the school sector know as soon as possible if we have any new arrangements," she said.

"From the observation at this moment, I think it's quite stable and likely we remove [the requirement] if the situation is similar."

Speaking on an RTHK programme, Choi noted that the arrangements for pupils living on the mainland to return to schools in Hong Kong have been running smoothly.

Secondary school pupils living across the border were allowed to to officially resume in-person learning in the SAR on Wednesday, two days after the full resumption of travel between the two sides.
