The Office of the Chief Secretary has refused to grant an exemption from gathering restrictions for a march planned for Sunday by the Hong Kong Journalists Association, citing to the Covid-19 pandemic.

On Friday, an appeal board overturned a police ban on the march, provided an exemption was granted by Chief Secretary Matthew Cheung.

The march would have been Hong Kong's first legal protest in months.

The union had said it wanted to highlight, what it called, the suppression of the media and issues such as the arrest of the RTHK producer Bao Choy.

Late on Friday, Cheung's office said there would be no exemption to rules that ban gatherings of more than four.
