Martin Lee talks to RTHK's Priscilla Ng

Veteran pro-democracy campaigner Martin Lee said on Thursday that he understands why people are calling for extradition bill protests to be stepped up, but he hopes those taking part won't resort to violence.

The founding chairman of the Democratic Party said protesters are frustrated because the government has ignored their demands, but they need to stick to peaceful action.

"The young people have won the admiration of the whole world because of the peaceful means they used. Now, there’s no need to resort to any force," Lee said.

"They cannot win and cannot bring any better result except it will tarnish all the efforts so far," he said, referring to the two massive protest marches earlier this month.

Lee told RTHK’s Priscilla Ng that he thinks the government is waiting for protesters to make a mistake.

Meanwhile, Council Front legislator Au Nok-hin said he will write to Japanese politicians urging them to highlight the extradition law row during a G20 summit in Osaka next week.

US President Donald Trump has also said he will raise the matter with President Xi Jinping when they meet at the summit.
