The Prince of Wales Hospital is investigating after one of its patients apparently stabbed himself to death in a surgical ward.

The hospital said the 40-year-old man was transferred from Sha Tin Hospital on Saturday with respiratory problems.

A test was conducted on him at around 8.30pm the same night. About an hour later, a doctor found the man with four stab wounds to his chest. A pair of scissors and a letter addressed to his family, which appears to be a suicide note, were beside him.

Doctors tried to save him but he died hours later. The case has been reported to police and the coroner. The hospital says it will support the man's family.
