A man has been jailed for letting his dogs starve to death when he fled his home in Yuen Long because he believed it was haunted.

Tuen Mun Magistracy heard that Chan Sing-cheong, 68, abandoned 18 dogs and a cat in the flat for over a month last year, and 10 of the dogs died.

He was given a 12-month prison term and fined HK$4,000 for animal cruelty and owning dogs without a licence.

In sentencing, deputy magistrate Frances Leung said the case was very serious because of the animals' extreme suffering.

The cat and dogs which survived, she added, were left physically and emotionally scarred. She said it might have been better if Chan had simply set them free.
