A 24-year-old man was sentenced to five-and-a-half years in prison for biting off part of a police officer’s finger and breaking the arm of another policeman during anti-government protests almost two years ago.

The District Court heard that To Kai-wa bit off the tip of police sergeant Leung Kai-yip’s right ring finger during clashes between protesters and police in New Town Plaza in Shatin, on July 14, 2019.

To was also found guilty of using an umbrella to hit superintendent Leung Tsz-kin, breaking his arm, and striking police constable Ip Cheuk-hin.

The University of Hong Kong graduate was earlier convicted of four charges, namely wounding with intent, causing grievous bodily harm, assaulting a police officer and behaving in a disorderly manner in a public place.

In sentencing, judge Johnny Chan says he has taken into account the need to punish the defendant and to ensure his rehabilitation, to deter future offenders, and to heal the wounds of the victims and their families.
