A man has been arrested on suspicion of abusing dogs at a kennel in Ta Kwu Ling.

Officers at the scene also examined the condition of the animals being kept there.

The police operation on Saturday came after an animal welfare group posted images online showing poor hygiene conditions at the kennel.

The group said its volunteers found about 50 dogs there, and at least two appeared to be dead.

The case came just a day after the government launched a public consultation on a tough set of laws to strengthen animal welfare in Hong Kong, which would see violators jailed for up to 10 years or slapped with fines as high as HK$2 million, and officials given the right to enter premises and seize abused animals.
