Large water barriers have gone up around the central government's liaison office and Western District police station ahead of Sunday's protest in Sheung Wan. Paving stones have also been glued together to prevent them being dug up and used as missiles.

Protesters look set to defy the government on Sunday after authorities rejected an appeal by an applicant to allow a rally from Chater Garden to the Sun Yat Sen Memorial Park in Sheung Wan, which is close to Beijing's liaison office.

On Saturday, an appeals committee upheld the police decision not to grant permission to the march and agreed with the police decision to allow permission only for a gathering at Chater Garden.

The police had offered an alternate route on Friday night, but the organiser Ventus Lau had rejected it.

Last Sunday, anti-extradition protesters gathered outside the liaison office and the state symbol was splashed with ink, leading to a strongly-worded response from Beijing.

Police headquarters in Admiralty has also been the target of recent anti-extradition protests.
