Recent anti-extradition protests appear to have drawn a rebuke from the Law Society.
In a statement issued on Friday, the society says the rights of others, the normal functioning of public services, as well as law and order, should not be compromised when people exercise their freedom of speech and assembly.
Anti-extradition protesters have twice laid siege to the police headquarters, rallied at a number of government buildings, and surrounded the Justice Department's offices.
The society, which represents Hong Kong's solicitors, also said that public prosecutors are guided by the evidence, not how an event is labelled.
Protesters have demanded the retraction of the description of the June 12 protest as a riot, and for plans to prosecute those arrested that day be dropped.
