Chief Secretary Matthew Cheung has refused to divulge what was discussed during a late-night meeting at Government House on Wednesday night, calling it "just an ordinary meeting".

During an emergency question-and-answer session in Legco, Federation of Trade Unions lawmaker Alice Mak demanded that Cheung reveal details of the talks, adding that officials should resign if they aren't prepared to do anything to stamp out growing violence in society.

People Power’s Ray Chan, meanwhile, said the resignation of unpopular principal officials would help cool social tensions.

He also dared the chief secretary to make a speech on the streets in Central during lunch time, where he could come face to face with protesters.

Cheung told lawmakers that Wednesday night's meeting – which followed another day of chaos and transport disruption – was "nothing special". He said it was just an "ordinary" meeting to discuss how to strengthen coordination.

He said it was only held late at night because everybody was busy during the day.

In response, to Chan's suggestion, Cheung said top officials may hit the streets to help clear debris used to stop traffic, and he invited legislators to join in.

Mak is standing in this month's district council polls and is up against the Civic Party's Sin Ho-fai for a seat in Kwai Tsing.
