Hundreds of protesters have left the Hong Kong airport even as flights in and out of the city remained cancelled after thousands of people besieged the arrival and departure halls.

One RTHK reporter saw large groups of people walking all the way to the Tung Chung MTR, which is over five kilometres away.

As there were hundreds of people, many decided not to waste time waiting for the buses and decided to walk, one woman said.

Some in the group said they had achieved their aim of disrupting the airport service and then decided to leave.

Many of them had got messages saying police was planning an operation to clear the airport soon. This also hastened departure of some people.

When the lights went out at one stage at the airport, it also added to the belief that a clearance was on the way. But the lights reappeared after a while.
