La Salle College has once again churned out the highest number of top grade students in this year's Hong Kong Diploma for Secondary Education examination, with three students who obtained the highest score of 5** for all seven subjects.

Diocesan Girls' School also produced two top achievers, while students at other traditional elite schools such as Diocesan Boys', Queen's College and St Paul's Co-educational College also performed well.

More than half of the top students said they hope to study medicine at university.

Several of them also gave their views on the ongoing extradition bill controversy during media interviews.

Three students from La Salle College, as well as one from Diocesan Boys' School, said they believe Chief Executive Carrie Lam should appoint an independent inquiry to look into the saga.

One of them also said the most important thing is to mend the rift in society, but added he doesn't think this could be achieved by Carrie Lam stepping down.

The two top students from Diocesan Girls' School said protesters should remain peaceful. One of them also said she hopes Hong Kong people will feel assured now that the CE has declared the bill "dead", but added she hopes the government will carry out more thorough consultations before it rolls out any new policies in future.

Education Secretary Kevin Yeung encouraged students during a school visit to take their exam results in their stride, and reminded them that there are many options available to further their studies.
