Kowloon Motor Bus has asked its part-time drivers to work at least 18 hours a week, or be made to perform non-driving duties.

The company suspended its 200 part-time drivers last month. The move was sparked by concerns over the supervision of part-time drivers following the bus crash in Tai Po in which 19 people died. The bus involved had been driven by a part-time driver.

KMB spokesman Addie Lam says those working at least 18 hours a week will have to declare their other jobs by law, which means the company can better determine whether they are suitable to be on the road.

He says 90 of the 200 have agreed to work longer hours, but the company is still trying to figure out the arrangements for those who reject the new terms.

A KMB representative on Monday met with more than 20 part-time drivers who oppose the plan.

The Democratic Party's Lam Cheuk-ting has been helping those drivers. The lawmaker says making them work at least 18 hours a week on top of their full-time jobs will exhaust them and increase safety risks. He also described the non-driving duties offer as unacceptable and insulting.
