The driver of a KMB bus which ploughed into the scene of a previous accident on Tsuen Wan Road two years ago, throwing a man off a 14-metre bridge, has been found guilty of dangerous driving.

The District Court rejected Vicky Lam's claim that the accident happened because she lost concentration for two to three seconds and that she should be facing only a charge of careless driving.

The double accident that happened after midnight on August 20, 2017, left 23-year-old Lau Cheuk-yin with multiple bone fractures and he is now wheelchair-bound as his lower body is paralysed.

He has completely lost his ability to work, is in need of constant care, and is financially supported by his parents and disability subsidies.

In the first traffic accident of that night, Lau’s Honda sedan collided with another vehicle on Tsuen Wan Road, but no one was injured.

Police arrived at the scene and were arranging to tow away the damaged vehicles when the KMB double-decker crashed into the back of a police van parked at the scene, which was then thrown against the damaged vehicle.

The bus rammed into the police van even though all the vehicles had their hazard lights on. At least 5 people were injured in the second accident.

The court heard that the bus was travelling at 50 kilometres per hour.

The 46-year-old driver had told investigators that her vision was blocked by some “strong light”, and she did not see the police car until after the crash.

However, judge Frankie Yiu rejected this claim. He said over a hundred cars had safely driven past the accident scene before the bus driver crashed into the police van and he didn’t believe there was any “strong light” at all.

He also did not believe Lam’s claim that she merely lost concentration momentarily, as she did not slow the bus down at all.

The judge concluded that her driving attitude was clearly dangerous and convicted her of dangerous driving.

Sentencing was set for March 27.
