Customs officers revealed on Thursday that they had foiled an attempt by a drug syndicate to smuggle 120 kilogrammes of ketamine into Hong Kong via air cargo.
It was the largest haul seized by the department in a decade and officers estimated the drug had a street value of about HK$57 million.
The head of customs' airport investigation group, Lai Chi-wing, said they found the ketamine in cargo from Malaysia that had been declared as car equipment and tea leaves.
He said the drug was found hidden inside tea packaging.
Officers said they believed the ketamine was mostly intended for other markets and not Hong Kong.
No arrests had been made over the haul so far.
