William Chui speaks to RTHK's Janice Wong

The president of the Society of Hospital Pharmacists, William Chui, advised people on Friday to stop taking the over-the-counter digestion drug, Enzyplex, over fears it may be contaminated with mould.

The government was carrying out tests on the medication after a batch prescribed to a cancer patient in Queen Mary Hospital was found to be contaminated.

Professor Chui told RTHK’s Janice Wong that while people should probably avoid using Enzyplex for now, it is not unusual to find mould in medication.

He said there are several factors involved in drug making that can lead to fungus formation, such as the ingredients and storage conditions. But the amount of fungus found in the drugs is usually negligible and doesn't cause problems for a normal adult, he said.

However he advised people to stop taking Enzyplex for now, especially the elderly.

"Because for safety sake, especially for elderly, we have a lot of alternatives for digestion disorders, they can ask their pharmacists or doctors to change to another product," he said.
