The Chief Executive, Carrie Lam, says the fact that Hong Kong has continued to organise events marking the June 4th Tiananmen Square crackdown shows freedoms are well protected in the SAR.

Speaking to reporters before heading into the weekly Executive Council meeting, the Chief Executive said a lot of people remember the event that happened 30 years ago.

Lam did not say if she would reflect to Beijing Hong Kong people’s wishes for the 1989 pro-democracy movement be vindicated.

But she also said the city is upholding freedoms of speech and expression.

“Hong Kong is a very free society. We uphold and safeguard the rights and freedoms of individuals in Hong Kong. So today, if there are public gatherings to express their views and feelings on a particular historic incident, we fully respect those views,” Lam said.

She added she hopes the June 4th commemorative events will be held in a peaceful and orderly manner.

The annual candlelight vigil will be held at Victoria Park on Tuesday, marking the 30th anniversary of the crackdown.
