Chief Executive John Lee has tested positive for Covid after returning to Hong Kong from his first overseas trip as the city’s leader.

A spokesman from the Chief Executive’s Office said in a statement issued on Monday that Lee had tested negative on rapid tests during his four-day trip to Bangkok, but a PCR test administered upon his return to Hong Kong on Sunday evening came back positive.

The spokesperson said Lee has been prescribed medication, as he is suffering from a mild fever as well as a sore throat, and is feeling a little tired.

He said the CE will undergo isolation and work from home for the time being, adding that the Executive Council meeting on Tuesday will be cancelled.

The CE Office said no other official who accompanied him on his trip have tested positive so far.

The SAR leader had led a 20-strong business delegation representing various sectors to the Thai capital where they sought trade opportunities.

Lee also attended the Apec summit, where he met with a number of top leaders from the Asia-Pacific region. He had also held meetings with Thai business leaders to tell them about Hong Kong's strengths as a gateway to the mainland, and as a centre for innovation, arts, and sports.
