John Tsang talks to RTHK's AnneMarie Evans
Former financial secretary and defeated chief executive candidate John Tsang said on Tuesday that an independent inquiry into the city's protests, and the way they have been policed, is essential.
He made the comment in an interview with RTHK after signing an open letter along with other former officials, academics and business leaders, urging the administration to go ahead with next week's district council elections despite the unrest.
"I think it's quite essential that we have an independent inquiry to find out the truth. The people in Hong Kong, we are intelligent. This is the only way we can make a correct judgement, based on the facts and the truth in front of us," he said.
The former FS also said it is down to the government to find a way to end Hong Kong's turmoil.
"Given the imbalance of power between the protesters and the government, I think the government must take the initiative to start some action to de-escalate the force they are exerting in the community and step back a bit, and hopefully, the other side will step back."
On the elections scheduled for November 24, Tsang told RTHK's AnneMarie Evans that the polls must go ahead even if the protests are continuing, as any move to cancel them would lead to even more violence.
