Health Services lawmaker Joseph Lee

Health Services legislator Joseph Lee has called on the government to increase the number of nurses per patient - so Hong Kong can meet international standards.

He said the situation had been particularly bad during this year's flu season.

Speaking on RTHK's "Letter to Hong Kong", Lee suggested some improvements, including reducing the amount of paperwork front-line staff have to contend with, and the scrapping of the policy which denies new recruits a pay-rise in their first two years of service.

And he expressed surprise that the Hospital Authority hasn't learned from experience, as flu outbreaks have become a "predictable episodic health crisis."
