Hundreds of medical professionals gathered in Central's Edinburgh Place on Friday evening to protest against the government’s handling of the extradition bill saga.

A large banner strung up read "Save Lives. Save Hong Kong".

Many said they had decided to join the protest after a nurse was among 44 people charged with rioting following violent clashes in Sheung Wan last Sunday.

They said she was only present during the violence because she was there to help anyone who got injured.

Most of the other people charged over the disturbances were students, although an airline pilot and a teacher were also among the group.

Police had given their permission for Friday's rally, which kicked off an hour before another protest planned by civil servants at nearby Chater Garden.

Earlier in the day, Health Secretary Sophia Chan urged medical staff to "stay united during this difficult time".
