Housing Secretary Frank Chan said on Monday that officials are doing their best to speed up the construction of public flats.

He was responding to a remark made by Chief Executive Carrie Lam, who suggested that the Housing Authority should give financial assistance to people in the queue for a public flat, so as to make the body accountable for the supply.

Current subsidies for those waiting for public housing are paid by the government.

On a radio programme, Chan, who is also the chairman of the Housing Authority, said Lam's comment shows she is very concerned about the supply of public housing.

“Housing officials attach importance to the construction of flats and don't slack at all. They understand the plight of people who are waiting to be allocated public flats. They put pressure on themselves to speed up,” he added.
