Patient's brother speaks to RTHK's Janice Wong

The family of a 15-year-old girl who was left half paralysed after a suspected medical blunder has accused the United Christian Hospital of failing to give them a satisfactory response over the incident.

It is believed that an artery of the girl was wrongly pierced in a medical procedure in November which was meant to treat an inflammation in her spinal cord.

Speaking on a radio programme, the girl's brother, who only gave his surname as Chan, said the hospital management failed to fully explain the suspected blunder despite having met the family three times.

"We expect them to take their liability and at least apologise to us for their mistake," he said.

He said his sister's condition has improved and she does not require any equipment to assist with her breathing anymore.

He told RTHK's Janice Wong that the inflammation in her spinal cord has come down, but she still can't talk and the left side of her body remains paralysed.

Democratic Party legislator James To, who is helping the family, urged the Hospital Authority and the Health Secretary Sophia Chan to speed up an investigation currently being carried out by independent experts into the incident.
