  • Hong Kong sees 3,019 new local Covid infections

Hong Kong on Tuesday recorded 3,019 new local coronavirus infections, 237 imported cases and four deaths of Covid patients.

The Hospital Authority said a total of 1,190 people with Covid were being cared for in public hospitals – 152 of them newly admitted – with seven of the patients in intensive care.

The patients who died were aged between 90 and 99. One of them was double-jabbed, one received a single shot of vaccine and two were unvaccinated.

The Centre for Health Protection’s Chuang Shuk-kwan said if there is a drastic increase in infections, the healthcare system may be overwhelmed.

“We have seen infection numbers remaining over 3,000 for several days and they are likely to keep rising. We can see that the healthcare systems begin to become stretched in some other places, such as the UK and Australia,” noted Chuang.

“We are worried that if the figures continue to go up, it may affect Hong Kong’s healthcare services, especially services provided by the Hospital Authority,” she said.

The Hospital Authority’s Chief Manager, Larry Lee, added however, that contingency plans are in place to mobilise manpower and make more beds available.
