Hong Kong on Sunday reported 9,495 new local Covid infections –over a thousand cases more than the previous day.
Chuang Shuk-kwan from the Centre for Health Protection said the more transmissible subvariant of Omicron – BA.4 and BA.5 – predominate the new infections, accounting for around half of the cases.
"The figure of the confirmed cases is still increasing, in an increasing trend, with a faster rate recently, possibly due to the increasing proportion of BA.5 Omicron variant. So the number exceeds 10,000 is expected in the coming days," Chuang told a press conference.
The Hospital Authority said 2,453 patients are being treated in public hospitals, 13 of them are in intensive care.
Ten patients with Covid-19 died, although only five of the deaths were thought to be directly related to the coronavirus.
There were 213 imported cases for the day.
