Hong Kong on Saturday reported 8,874 new coronavirus infections, including 509 imported cases.

Nine more patients with Covid have died.

The government has rejected calls to further relax social distancing measures and restrictions on people flying in from overseas as the city’s Covid caseload has increased recently.

Health officials have repeated appeals for the public, especially the elderly and children, to get vaccinated against Covid-19 to prevent complications and deaths.

From next month, authorities are rolling out the BioNTech booster shots that protect against both the highly-infectious Omicron variant, and the original Covid strain.
