Mark Mak talks to RTHK's Janice Wong
Hong Kong authorities are being urged to set up a dedicated force to protect animals after a spate of suspected animal cruelty cases were reported over the past couple of days.
Two dead turtles were found dead on the platform of a Cheung Sha Wan building on Thursday – the same location where a dog fell to its death on Wednesday. The dog had been rescued from Victoria Harbour by the police and returned to ist owner just a few days before its death.
Animal rights activist Mark Mak said it is clear there's a lack of protection for animals in Hong Kong.
Mak, who is also an executive chairman of the non-profit Veterinary Services Society, said Hong Kong still relies on Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Ordinance that was passed in 1935 while the laws in Macau and Taiwan are much more current.
Mak told RTHK's Janice Wong that for example, a vehicle that knocks down a dog or a cat in Hong Kong is not seen as a punishable action under the ordinance.
