  • HKU to file complaint over police entering campus

The University of Hong Kong said in a statement on Wednesday that it will file a complaint to the police over three officers going onto its campus without informing officials, in violation of protocol.

The statement said the university was concerned about the officers entering the campus for a few minutes after midnight on July 17.

Security immediately questioned why they were there, it added.

The student union's magazine, Undergrad, had released a video showing the officers wandering outside its office. Police had reportedly told the security guards that they were only "passing by".

This comes after vice-chancellor Zhang Xiang had told students on Friday evening that authorities would only allow police to enter the campus after receiving notification from the force.

Zhang said this while addressing hundreds of students who marched to his house on Friday night, demanding that he withdraw his statement criticising extradition bill protesters.

Zhang received the students and answered their questions, saying he condemned violence of all kinds and was not criticising protesters alone.

Later in a statement, the police said they are in touch with the HKU authorities about the incident.

The spokesman said the police will look into the matter seriously.
