The Hong Kong Observatory said on Friday that typhoon signal number three would remain in force until noon, and whether the number eight signal needs to be issued depends on the development of Severe Tropical Storm Chaba.

The system has strengthened as it moves towards the coast of western Guangdong. As of Friday morning, the storm was estimated to be around 470 kilometres south of Hong Kong.

The observatory says local winds are strong over offshore areas and on high ground, with stronger winds affecting the southern part of the territory in particular.
