A group of Hong Kong residents who say they've been left trapped in Britain called on Saturday for the government to ease a travel ban, saying the Basic Law guarantees their right to return.

The ban was issued nearly a fortnight ago, following the discovery of a more contagious mutation of the Covid-19 virus that has spread rapidly in the UK.

In an open letter, the Hongkongers say they've been in contact with various SAR government departments – but they were told that similar bans have been issued by some 40 other jurisdictions, as officials appeal for their understanding.

However, the group noted that all other Asian jurisdictions which have imposed travel bans have allowed their own citizens to return.

They added that European countries have lifted similar bans, and India's ban will only last until next Thursday.

The group said according to data they collected, most of them only went to Britain for emergencies or to visit their families. They now need to return for work and aren't equipped for a long absence from home.

They said the "watertight" testing and quarantine system in Hong Kong is enough to control the spread of Covid.
