Jack Yiu speaks to RTHK's Maggie Ho
A Hong Kong student group at the University of Queensland said on Wednesday that they are planning to hold another anti-extradition rally on Friday.
During a protest last week, there were some clashes between some groups and mainland students, who attacked and surrounded the protesters.
UQ Hong Kong Student Association, which has been organising events in support of the anti-extradition protests, said apart from hundreds of Hong Kong students, some locals also have joined them in solidarity.
“Most of Australians are supportive, and they totally understand what we are trying to do. So, that’s why we got support from the UQ political group,” said Jack Yiu, an undergraduate student who is a committee member of the association.
They also plan to set up a new Lennon Wall on campus, Yiu said.
He told RTHK's Maggie Ho that they have been joining hands with a local political group that fights against what it calls "communist party influence on campus" to hold events.
The local group is protesting against the setting up of “Confucius Institutes” in universities and other human rights issues in China. The Australian government has ordered a probe into the issue of such organisations influencing the running of universities.
In the rally held on Wednesday on campus on this issue, Hong Kong students also made speeches to explain the extradition bill controversy.
