Health officials on Wednesday said Hong Kong added 971 local coronavirus infections.
There were also 76 imported cases, bringing the daily caseload to 1,047 – the highest in around two months.
477 of the new local cases were identified in laboratories, while the rest were rapid test results confirmed by the authorities.
About 60 students from Pui Ching Middle School have been asked to stop attending classes for the rest of this week, after at least six schoolmates attending a dinner with them on June 10 came down with the virus.
The infected students were members of the school's track and field team, according to the Centre for Health Protection's Albert Au.
He said there’s no need to order class suspensions at the school just yet.
"For now, there's no evidence that these students had transmitted the virus in their classes," Au said, adding that the centre will continue to monitor the situation closely.
Officials also announced that an 83-year-old Covid patient with heart and liver problems had died.
