Security Secretary Chris Tang says Hong Kong needs to introduce more national security legislation as the National Security Law introduced by Beijing mainly only addresses issues related to the unrest of 2019.
Appearing on Sunday's episode of the RTHK show NSL Chronicles II , Tang noted that the security law does not cover all the offences outlined in Article 23 of the Basic Law.
These offences include sedition, but Tang cited recent court cases involving a book of cartoons and the jailing of former People Power vice-chairman Tam Tak-chi as evidence that other existing legislation is able to deal with such matters.
He said the authorities are considering whether to introduce new legislation to address national security concerns related to crowdfunding and cybersecurity.
Tang told the programme that there is a need to educate Hong Kong people on the issue of national security.
"We must let people know what is national security, what kinds of national security risks we are facing, how to reduce these risks and prevent them from happening," he said.
"Most importantly, we have to develop people's national security awareness."
