A Hong Kong Island resident has launched a judicial review aimed at stopping Au Nok-hin, who won a by-election on Sunday, from becoming a Legislative Council member.
Businessman Wong Tai-hoi said the returning officer for the Hong Kong Island constituency should not have allowed Au to run in the polls in the first place because he supported Hong Kong independence.
Accompanied by former Federation of Trade Unions lawmaker Wong Kwok-hing, Wong also alleged that Au did not support the Basic Law because he burnt a copy of the mini constitution at a protest in 2016.
But speaking on a radio programme, the legislator-elect stressed he’s always upheld the Basic Law and argued that he only burnt a prop of the mini constitution in the protest against an NPC interpretation two years ago.
He called on the government and those in the pro-establishment camp to show restraint, accept the election outcome, and respect the choice of Hong Kong island voters.
Au also revealed that the Legco Secretariat has arranged his swearing-in to be held next Wednesday.
