Hongkongers appear to be no more happy than they were 12 months ago but no less so either, according to a United Nations ranking which for the second year in a row puts Hong Kong as the 76th happiest place in the world.
This is the UN’s seventh annual world happiness report. In 2017, Hong Kong ranked 71st, and it was 75th in 2016 out of more than 150 places.
The latest report says the index is based on individuals’ assessment of their well-being relating to various factors, such as economic growth, social support, freedom, healthy life expectancy, and the absence of corruption where they live.
Nordic countries top the list, with Finland named the happiest country in the world, followed by Denmark, Norway, and Iceland.
Taiwan is the happiest place in East Asia, occupying the 25th place on the index. Singapore ranks 34th, while China has dropped seven places from last year and is now ranked 93rd.
Despite uncertainties over Brexit negotiations, the United Kingdom’s ranking improved from 19th last year to 15th this time.
South Sudan has replaced Burundi as the world's most unhappy country.
