Hong Kong International Airport has climbed one place to take fourth spot in this year's World's Best Airport award, based on a survey by Skytrax of 13 million passengers.

The airport's major rival in the region, Singapore's Changi Airport, retains the number one title for the sixth consecutive year. No airport has previously held onto the top spot for this long since the award was introduced in 2000.

Seoul's Incheon Airport came in second, followed by Haneda in Tokyo.

Hong Kong came first in the sub-categories of best airport for dining, and best airport for transit passengers.

The Airport Authority has been upgrading its facilities at Chek Lap Kok over the past few months to catch up with other popular airports in the region.

It has expanded high-speed WiFi coverage, installed additional USB and power sockets, and added free shower facilities for arriving and transit passengers.

Officials also claim the third runway being built could boost the airport's flight-handling capacity to more than 100 flights per hour, up from the current 67.
