  • Health Secretary gives Enzyplex warning

The health secretary, Sophia Chan, says people should not take the over-the-counter drug Enzyplex, following a contamination scare at Queen Mary Hospital.

The drug, which is used to treat digestive problems, has now been recalled after mould was found on tablets prescribed to a cancer patient.

Chan says even though the Indonesian-made product is no longer available in the market, a lot of people may have the drug at home.

The health chief also said she didn’t believe this incident necessitated a review of how the government monitors drugs manufactured overseas.

She said Hong Kong’s system is very robust, and the Department of Health has stringent measures in place.

“First of all, [the drugs] need to be registered elsewhere, they will also look into reports provided by the drug company that it is safe, its efficacy is OK, and also its quality is OK,” she said.
