RTHK has learned that the Hospital Authority plans to extend the retirement age for all staff from 60 to 65.
The move is widely seen as a measure to retain manpower.
It is said that workers will have the option to retire either at 60 or 65, and the new arrangement will not affect their career prospects.
The proposal will be discussed at the authority's board meeting on September 23 at the earliest.
Earlier, the government revised its amendment bill to recruit non-locally trained specialist doctors from overseas in order to address a personnel shortage at public hospitals.
Last month, the chairman of the Hospital Authority, Henry Fan, expressed concern in an interview about an increasing loss of public sector medical staff due to emigration.
