The Highways Department on Sunday gave the MTR Corporation 48 hours to provide a written response to allegations of more shoddy work on the Shatin-Central Link. The allegations centre on alleged substandard excavation work at the future station at the Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai.
The Highways Department said it had not been notified of the matter by the MTR. It said, as the MTR was the project manager, it had the responsibility to ensure safety and quality.
Earlier, the chairman of Legco's railway subcommittee, Michael Tien, said sources had told him a subcontractor had been ordered to stop all excavation work at the Exhibition Centre Station, after the MTR found inadequate support underground.
The revelation comes in the wake of another scandal surrounding the Shatin-Central Line, which is under construction. Iron bars supporting a platform at the link's Hung Hom Station extension are understood to have been cut short.
