  • Govt, society failing on innovation: Fanny Law

Hong Kong Science Park boss Fanny Law, who is rumoured to be leaving the post, said on Wednesday that the city has been failing on innovation and science development because various government departments aren't all pulling in the same direction.

Speaking at a forum, Law said with excellent universities and talented young people, Hong Kong does have the potential to become a hub for innovation.

But she warned that there are two "critical issues" that need to be addressed.

"All the government, at all levels, must support innovation and technology on a long-term basis. And I think we have failed to achieve that," Law said.

"And secondly, the community as a whole must embrace technology, again on a long-term basis. So, industry, businesses, government and academia must work together."

Despite hinting at the forum that she will soon be playing a lesser role in government affairs, Law praised Chief Executive Carrie Lam for what she described as her "total dedication" to promoting the innovation sector.

The CE also had praise for Law earlier this week, despite reports that Lam has forced Law to step down from her role as head of the science park.
