  • Govt has no plans to use ChatGPT: Sun Dong

The government has a "very open attitude" towards the development of generative artificial intelligence (AI) technology but has no plans at present to adopt the new ChatGPT chatbot, technology chief Sun Dong said on Friday.

Speaking to reporters after attending a digital economy summit, Sun noted that Beijing recently proposed new measures regarding technology and applications related to generative AI, and said the SAR government is paying close attention to developments in this area.

The Cyberspace Administration of China said service providers will have to ensure that AI-generated content reflects socialist values and doesn't subvert national power, among other things.

Sun said the SAR government will collaborate with all sectors of society to support the development of generative AI in Hong Kong to "push relevant technologies to new heights".

The secretary for innovation, technology and industry also said the administration does not plan to use ChatGPT for now.

"OpenAI hasn't yet officially granted permission for ChatGPT to be used in the region, and considering the potential information security risks posed by ChatGPT, the SAR government currently has no plans to officially list ChatGPT as an application for internal government use," he said.

In February, Sun said the government planned to set up a task force to prepare for the challenges ChatGPT could bring.
